Bandwidth
Today seemed like it belonged in last week.
It was just as crazy. We’re still doing the pre-school (not preschool) scramble. Every department has things that need to be done now, and we’re still working on things of our own. The placement test was today, so Matt spent most of the day babysitting those machines. Kevin was running around to practically each dorm room troubleshooting internet connections. In many cases, it was of the variety, “Yes, the connection works, the problem is with your computer. Good bye.” Mike was working on a legal issue that arose this weekend (Someone created a myspace on behalf of our President and posted some unflattering things). I was still working on some bandwidth issues with that the placement testing will strain on our network.
The funny thing is, at about 15:00 we got a call from Matt that many of the testers were loosing connection to the internet (the testing was internet based). I checked the bandwidth, and noticed that the students were pulling more than their load. Here’s a graph of the bandwidth on the t1 line.
As you can see, the bandwidth dropped off sharply a little after 15:00. That’s when I pulled the plug on the dorms internet connection. Yup. Mike made the decision that the placement test was more important that the students chatting with their boyfriend/girlfriend. So I disabled the port that routes the traffic to the dorm gateway. A sadistic part of me rejoiced in my power.
Testing went just fine.
After work, Becky Sharon and I went to Mimi’s for dinner. I got the turkey pesto ciabatta. I like ciabatta, as it turns out.
That’s about it for my day.
Some announcements before I end.
First of all, Becky and picked up my ring last weekend. It’s awesome. I’ll bet you’re dying to see what it looks like. I would hate to see you die, so here it is. It’s mostly titanium with platinum rings. Fancy, huh? Here’s a tastefully artistic photo of Becky and my ring together.
Second and foremost, I would like to extend heartfelt congratulations to one of my best friends, Alfred. I’ve known Alfred for somewhere in the vicinity of 16 years, and he’s someone I respect immensely. He gave me a call this past week and told me that he recently proposed to his girlfriend. Alfred, I wish you and your new fiancee the best. Congratulations.
