We Wield Wii
I got a Wii this weekend.
I’ve had the desire to purchase one since the first reports of the innovative controls, but I didn’t want to fight to get one at launch, and I was (am still) busy with school. During spring break, a friend let me borrow his Wii while he was out of town, and I came to love it even more. I pleaded with my wife and she conceded to allow me to purchase one.
So I attempted to do so. I started on the internet. Amazon was sold out, Costco was sold out, all the online retail stores I could think of were sold out. So I tried the brick & mortar places. I called every Target, Best Buy, Circuit City and Gamestop within a 25 mile radius. All sold out.
I came to realize I wasn’t the only one with this predicament. I found websites devoted to tracking Wii inventories:
Refresh Thing kept an eye on online retailers, while I had backdoors to Target, Circuit City and Gamestop to peek at their in-store inventories. I found these links on the WiiChat forum. Adjust the URL with your zip code to find stores near you.
So I’ve been tracking Wii Consoles in my area with no success. I called a couple of places on Friday (20 April) and two stores informed me that they plan on receiving a shipment on Sunday (22 April.) Since most stores open between 08:00 and 10:00 on Sundays, I didn’t think I had a chance. Come Sunday, I’m at church getting ready to direct the weekend service when I get a call from the friend who had let me borrow his Wii. He was calling to inform that he knew that a Target store nearby had gotten a shipment. My wife volunteered to drive over there in an attempt to procure one. I called ahead and the the store operator informed me that they had received a limited number but there was already a line outside the store. I told my wife to forget about it and we went to church.
After church I wanted to drive by a couple of store just to make sure. The first Target I went to had one left on the floor. I purchased the console and The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. Mission accomplished. I’d like to thank all of those who made this moment possible, without you I couldn’t be here today. Hi Mom!
