How long has it been?

Friday, September 25th, 2009

It’s been a while. It looks like the last time I posted was December of last year.

Well, I think that writing these posts will be good, not only as an exercise to keep my literary muscles toned, but also for posterity.

So here goes:

Broken Clock

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008

Becky and I have this old portable digital alarm clock. We keep it in the bathroom so we can keep an eye on the time during our morning routine. Now, the clock is old and has been dropped one to many times. You see, part of the digital display is malfunctioning. It will show the hour digit just fine, and it will show the last digit of the minute just fine, but the first digit of the minute does not show correctly.

Grocery Store Embarrasment

Wednesday, December 17th, 2008

Becky and I are attempting to get serious with our finances. We do alright, but we know we could do better. Inasmuch, this past weekend we sat down and hammered out a budget. We’ve done this before, but it normally gets abandoned as soon as we see something shiny.
We are trying again. The first budget cut was dining out. We dine out a lot. Pretty much every night. It’s not that neither of us enjoy cooking, it’s more that we don’t enjoy planning and the overall time it takes. But that will stop. We will cook.

Thanksgiving 2008

Thanksgiving 2008

This year we spent Thanksgiving with my mother and father in Las Vegas. Once we decided that we were going to travel for the holiday, we had to decide exactly how and when. In the past we’ve either driven our own car the over 300 miles, or rented a car for the long trip. This time, we decided to fly. Out flight was scheduled to leave Orange County at 18:10, but the flight was delayed more than an hour, so we didn’t arrive until 20:30. My father greeted us and we drove to my mother and father’s house where we were able to stay in the guest room for the duration of our stay.

New Laws & Wise Teeth

Monday, September 15th, 2008

For those of you not in California, we passed a law a couple months ago banning the use of a hand-held mobile phone while driving. This is to encourage the use of a car-wide speaker system that connects to your phone, or a bluetooth headset. However, We’ve seen people holding the cell phone a few inches away from their faces, like that makes it okay:

Oh, we need a hands-free device now? well, how about I just don’t press it against my ear, that’ll be fine.

It’s a hands-free law, not a face-free law.

In personal news, I’m taking tomorrow and possibly the next day off work. I’m getting my wisdom teeth removed while under the effects of general anesthesia. Fun, huh? We’ve stocked up on pudding, jello and juice for my eating comfort. I’ve never been unconscious before, but then again I’ve never had my wisdom teeth removed, so here’s to new experiences.

Back from our Alaskan Vacation

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

We have returned, and we’re suffering a mild case of mal de debarquement syndrome.

For now, I need to sleep, but I didn’t want to leave you all hanging any longer, so enjoy these Flickr photos from the trip.

Full write-up to come later.

Sick and Memorial Day

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

I vomited last Thursday. And Friday.

Before that, I went to work as normal on Thursday (22 May) morning. At about 07:45, the power went off. It came back on less then a minute later, so I went up to the server room to make sure the servers weren’t broken. They weren’t. I went on with my normal day, or so I thought…

Car Update

Friday, April 4th, 2008

for those of you that didn’t hear, someone broke into my car and stole my stereo. Here are some pictures:

My car before: First thing I saw: Missing something:
Car break in - before Car Break in - first contact Car Break in - radio gone

Now I’ve reverted back to the factory radio. Anyone want to buy a slightly-broken-into Honda Civic? I’m gunna buy a MINI. And we’re going to move. to safetown, ID (for those of you not familiar with safetown, there are no spiders, lizards, hooligans or shouting neighbors. It’s entirely shenanigan-free.)

Netflix FTW

Friday, April 4th, 2008

Not at all recently, the Hollywood Video that Becky and I formerly frequented, closed down. Since then, we’ve gone without movie rentals. No longer! We signed up for Netflix. I looked at both Blockbuster online and Netflix, and through an entirely arbitrary and nonsensical set of trials (including casting lots), we fixed upon Netflix for our mail-dvd provider. It really was a simple decision because we can never do business with Blockbuster again. I’ll just say it involves us renting Tootsie.

Last week we received our first two movie-films: Becoming Jane and La Vie en Rose. We attempted to stagger our returns, so we wouldn’t be forced to wait for our next two movies, but so far we’ve failed. We’ll see how we do with the next batch. We currently have Eastern Promises and This is England.

Post-dated post: 15 March 2008

This weekend my parents drove out in their green (both physically and environmentally) car to spend a weekend with us. On Friday we met them at Downtown Disney, listened to the UC Davis marching (read: dancing) band “perform” outside the Anaheim House of Blues. We ended up eating nearby at Tortilla Jo’s for dinner. We went into the Disneyland park and rode a number of enjoyable attractions, including, but not limited to: The Matterhorn, Big Thunder Mountain, and Indiana Jones and the Temple of the Forbidden Eye. We also took the following photograph:

Right before the fireworks spectacular, we left. The next day, we returned to the resort, but started at Disney’s California Adventure. We had a good time, and we successfully convinced my parents to purchase annual passports so we can go whenever they come visit us.
