We Gather Together
We gather together….
I really wanted to find the clip of the crazy Aunt singing this hymn in the 1995 film, “Home For the Holidays” but I couldn’t find it.
But I did find their prayer. Yikes.
So here is the song being sung.
It turns out that this a truly beautiful VERY old hymn… 1597. Um, woah.
Text: Nederlandtsch Gedencklanck; trans. by Theodore Baker
Music: 1597 – 16th cent. Dutch melody; arr. by Edward Kremser (1838-1914)
Tune: KREMSER, Meter: Irr.
We gather together to ask the Lord’s blessing;
He chastens and hastens His will to make known;
The wicked oppressing now cease from distressing;
Sing praises to His Name; He forgets not His own.
Beside us to guide us, our God with us joining,
Ordaining, maintaining His kingdom divine;
So from the beginning the fight we were winning;
Thou, Lord, were at our side, all glory be Thine!
We all do extol Thee, Thou Leader triumphant,
And pray that Thou still our Defender will be;
Let Thy congregation escape tribulation;
Thy Name be ever praised! O Lord, make us free!
This is EVERYTHING to be thankful for, “So from the beginning the fight we were winning;
Thou, Lord, were at our side, all glory be Thine!”
